Upcoming Events & Meetings

    • 26 Apr 2017
    • 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM
    • Boston University, 725 Commonwealth Ave. Room CAS 324

The speaker, Svitlana Malykhina, will address specific problems in translating language variations across the Russian-speaking world, lexical differences in vocabulary that are generally associated with a region, alternative grammatical structures, and what challenges they present to the translator. She will focus on the peculiar instances of phrases with Russian modal expressions and emotional coloration of the words. She will also look at the strategies translators have used to render these peculiarities considering both readability and fidelity, and discuss inspired and faithful renderings of the original texts.

Svitlana Malykhina is head of the Russian Language Program at Boston University. Her research and teaching areas include Russian, Ukrainian, cross-cultural communication, cultural history, media discourse analysis, and translation theories.

For information, contact Adel Fauzetdinova at afaitan@bu.edu.
